Cruelty-Free vs. Vegan Makeup and Skincare
Vegan and cruelty-free skincare can be hard to navigate. Even if a finished product has no animal-derived ingredients, there may have been animal testing on some of the ingredients. Consider us your co-pilot in finding the best products.
Even if you’re not a full-on herbivore or animal-loving activist who sticks to a strictly plant-based diet, there’s something to be said about adopting a vegan skincare routine. After all, vegan products steer clear of any animal ingredients, which contributes to a kinder and more eco-friendly world.
That said, not all vegan products are completely natural or cruelty free. While many vegan skincare brands avoid synthetic fillers or chemical ingredients, the only way to ensure a product is truly “all natural” is to read the label.
It can also be confusing when it comes to vegan and cruelty-free skincare. While the two often go hand-in-hand, it’s not always a match made in animal-friendly heaven. Even if the finished product has no animal-derived ingredients, there may have been animal testing conducted on specific ingredients that are included.
To help you cut through the information clutter, we’ve outlined some vegan skincare basics so you can reap the benefits of animal-free products that will make your skin look as clear as your conscience feels.
Vegan vs. Cruelty Free
You might assume that all vegan skincare products are cruelty free since they do not contain any animal ingredients or animal byproducts. But the truth is that vegan does not necessarily mean cruelty free. That’s because some vegan products might still get tested on animals at some point during the creation process.
The best way to know a skincare brand is vegan and avoids all animal testing is to look for the Certified Vegan Logo, PETA’s Cruelty-Free and Vegan bunny symbol, or the Vegan Society’s Vegan Trademark.
Vegan Skincare Routine
It’s easy being green when you follow these basic steps to veganizing your regimen. We’ve collected some of our favorite vegan skincare products from Feel Beauty to help you get started.
Step One: Cleanse
The first thing for any skincare routine is to start with a clean slate. That means using a gentle yet effective face wash that will get rid of any dirt, oil, and residue. Thankfully, our Renewed Pumpkin Walnut Facial Cleanser does exactly that. Aloe vera soothes skin and pumpkin seed controls oil while walnut powder exfoliates to reveal smoother, radiant skin without any harsh scrubbing required. Even better, Renewed is suitable for all skin types.
Step Two: Tone
While this step is not necessary for dry skin types or those with sensitive skin, if you have oily skin, combination skin, or problem skin, an alcohol-free toner is a good idea to help maintain your skin’s pH balance and prepare it for moisturizer. Choose a natural toner with soothing botanicals and plant-based ingredients such as lavender, aloe, rose, or rosemary. Instead of alcohol, look for tea tree oil, which has similar antimicrobial and antiseptic properties but won’t strip skin of its natural oils.
Step Three: Moisturize
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. You hear it all the time and for good reason. No matter what your skin type is, proper hydration is key to keeping it balanced and healthy. If you’re not sure what kind of skin you have, our easy test will show you how to figure it out.
NORMAL, DRY, OR COMBINATION SKIN
Made with soothing cucumber, anti-inflammatory ivy leaf extract, and skin-brightening lime, Feel Beauty’s Balanced Moisture Balancing Cream makes a great day cream that keeps skin dewy without any greasiness. While you could wear it before bedtime, you might want to consider a richer night cream if you have dry skin. Balanced also works wonders as a body lotion or hand cream.
OILY SKIN OR PROBLEM SKIN
Fast absorbing and light to the touch, our Bright Daily Squalane + Facial Oil Blend is a must-have for acne-prone, inflamed, or oily skin. Crafted with plant-based squalane and acne-fighting rosehip oil and avocado oil, this silky face oil is also packed with vitamin C and vitamin E to fight breakouts while keeping your skin plump and hydrated. Add to that a delicious fragrance from grapefruit essential oil and you’ll instantly feel brighter.
Step Four: Sunscreen
Applying sunscreen might seem redundant after you’ve moisturized, but if you plan to spend any time outdoors (including just driving your car) it’s crucial to defend your skin against harmful UV rays. Not only does sunblock protect against skin cancer, but it also acts as an anti-aging buffer. Use a sunblock with a minimum SPF 30 rating and be sure to peruse our guide on how to select a sunscreen so you choose one that’s right for you.
Step Five: Treatment
Face masks are an affordable and effective way to freshen up your skin when it needs a little boost. While professional facials are a good idea, they’re not always practical when it comes to time and money. Invest in a couple of good masks that you can rotate every couple of weeks for optimal results.
VEGAN FACIAL MASKS
Restored Self-Warming Clay Mask: When applied to the skin, this mask warms up to open pores and let the ingredients get to work. It’s packed with hyaluronic acid for intense hydration, white charcoal powder for deep cleaning, and nigiri sea salt that detoxifies, exfoliates, and conditions skin.
Harmony Rose Petal Facial Mask: Loaded with rose petals, rose essential oils, and calming plant extracts, this luxurious mask comes in the form of an ultra-concentrated gel that deeply moisturizes skin, reduces redness, and tones skin. Expect the same feeling as getting a dozen roses, but for your face.
