Bridal Beauty and Tattoos — To Cover or Not to Cover

If your wedding day is approaching and you want to cover your tattoos before walking down the aisle, these four tips will help you decide just how to do that.

Cosmetics

One of the first things you can do with your tattoos on your wedding day is to cover them with traditional cosmetics. The good news is there are so many different alternatives and ways to temporarily cover your tattoos. A variety of professional camouflage products is available to anyone who wants to cover their tattoos on their wedding day. “Regular makeup that you use everyday just won’t do the trick.  Tattoos are not only highly pigmented, but traditional foundations and concealers will certainly rub off on you, your guests and just won’t have the staying power you want,” recommends Dana Persia, owner of Beautiful Brides Philly and master makeup artist.  Some suggestions for optimum coverage using high-end camouflage makeup are Dermablend  and Kat von D, which are two of the best tattoo coverage products on the market. The only alternative to over-the-counter makeup is to use airbrush makeup.

Tattoo Coverage with Airbrush Technique

The airbrushing method involves liquid makeup that you apply to your skin via an airbrush system. Although this method is somewhat expensive and time-consuming, the coverage and longevity it provides is by far superior to traditional makeup. “I’ve done many tattoo covers with airbrush makeup.  I recommend having this professionally done for your wedding as airbrush won’t rub off and will last until you wash it off.  Also, and this is extremely important — have your wedding day makeup artist do a trial run on the tattoo coverage to see how the makeup looks,” Persia added.

However, you do need to be careful when choosing kits and cosmetics for something like this. There are some things you need to keep in mind. First you need to be aware that not everything works for everyone. Just because one product works for one person’s skin type that doesn’t mean it will be effective for you. When buying makeup for covering up tattoos, make sure to pick the shades that will match your skin tone and be aware of product ingredients if you have specific skin allergies and consult a dermatologist. You can also test the products on a smaller portion of your tattoo at the store or with your makeup artist and see how your skin reacts. There are varieties of products that are great for a specific skin type such as sensitive skin, oily skin, and so on.

Purchase a Tattoo Cover

Another great way to temporarily cover up your tattoo for your wedding day is to use a tattoo cover, which is a quick and easy process. Tattoo covers are essentially stick-on patches that match your skin tone.  All you need to do is press the cover onto clean, dry skin, and then hold a wet cloth against it for about 30 seconds. Once you peel the paper backing and rinse, you are done. However, you do need to be very careful with tattoo cover, because if applied incorrectly you might risk them peeling off, so they might not be the best option if you want to cover larger areas of your body.

Get it Removed

In case you have some tattoos that you regret having made in the first place, there are ways for you to remove them. Laser tattoo removal procedures have especially been gaining more popularity recently. Though, if you opt for this option, you really need to be careful and well-informed about the process. Make sure that this is really what you want. Ask around for advice from your friends or check out the reviews online and read about other people’s experiences. Once you decide that this is exactly the route you want to take, consult your doctor and dermatologist before getting the procedure, and read this article on laser tattoo removal from WebMD for more information.

Clothes and Accessories

Lastly, if you don’t want to do any of those above-mentioned methods, there are easier ways, and one of the easiest is to simply use clothes and accessories for covering up your tattoos. A wrap, bolero or sweater can do a great job at camouflaging your tattoos on your wedding day. Or, you can always choose a wedding dress designed in a way that covers your tattoos.  For example, choose one with sleeves to cover the tattoos on your arms and one with a high back detail if you have them on your upper back or shoulders.   If you want to cover your neck tattoos, wear a high-necked wedding dress.

Whether you choose to cover or show your ink off to the world, in the end, the decisions is completely up to you because after all, it’s YOUR DAY darling!
